In fact, it's quite ironic that the drivers who are consistently pushing Winterbottom are his teammates Reynolds and Mostert (fourth and fifth on the table respectively) with Heimgartner now a regular fixture in the top 10 shoot out.
"We've won races ever year in the past, but we've also had those really bad, disastrous weekends in the past as well," said Winterbottom on his way to the track. "This year though, even on the bad days we've managed a top five finish.
"How bad the bad days are will either win or lose you a championship. What's so good this year is that we can change the car when it's not behaving that well and make big gains.
'We can now tune the car to rebound from a bad practice and get back inside the top five or 10. It's reactive to changes, which is probably the biggest difference to last year."
Happy drivers and a happy crew make for happy results. The team as a whole now have a fair bit of momentum going for them, which in turn will make it hard for the rest of the field to muscle them aside.
The normally dominant Red Bull Racing Australia outfit of Jamie Whincup and Lowndes are battling away, with Lowndes the meat in a Winterbottom/Coulthard sandwich.
Meanwhile, Whincup has struggled at just about every round and as a true champion is hanging in there in eighth place 391 points off the pace.
"Having all the cars in the team doing so well we're taking points off all the other drivers," said Winterbottom.
"Getting results from all the cars has lifted the mood in the whole team. It's like the love is being shared throughout the whole garage.
"It's the best feeling I've ever had in the garage and everyone is getting good results. Morale and confidence are way up and on any day we can have a car capable of winning."
Leading Kiwi in the field Coulthard likes his chances at the "Paperclip" and knows he's well within touching distance of Lowndes, who's just 12 points up the road.
Coulthard has been Mr Consistency this year and he and the team are now reaping the rewards.
A good result this weekend will see them serious contenders for a championship title.
"The racetrack [Queensland Raceway] provides some pretty good racing and there's a fair bit of passing," said Coulthard.
"I've been able to stand on the podium at every round of the series so far this year except Tasmania.
"We've got some good pace in the Freightliner Commodore this year, which is evident by our place in the championship. There's still a long way to go in the series and we need to keep the momentum rolling."
