Taylor Bourne made his rally debut yesterday at the event named in honour of his late dad, champion driver Possum.
Taylor finished the event, was 10th in his class and 45th overall - not bad work for a novice. His navigator yesterday was his stepdad, Rodney MP Mark Mitchell, who also made his rally debut. Taylor said before the race he was looking forward to the exhilaration of finally getting behind the wheel and seeing what he was capable of. He had been training at rally school.
The Pukekohe Car Club ran the Possum Bourne Memorial Rally for the first time in 2006 after holding a memorial rally sprint for two years.
Possum was killed in a collision during a practice run on April 30, 2003. Yesterday's rally took place on gravel roads in Franklin and North Waikato.
