As good as Israel Folau is, we are still not talking about his rugby skills. When we last mentioned him, the conclusion I had drawn was he needed to go.
Not because I don't believe in free speech generally because I do, and not because he is not heart felt in his belief because he is. It's because his position is part of something much bigger than him.
And ironically given the subject, it seems slightly unchristian to keep doing what he's doing and in doing that, making himself the centre of attention. We get what he believes in and what he believes in is deeply unsettling to a lot of people.
But what has made this worse is Raelene Castle, the head of Australian Rugby. She never dealt with it in the first place, she never set the parameters of the conversation.
According to Folau himself she misrepresented his views. She told him one thing, the sponsors another. The public version of events was she heard Folau, they agreed to be nice about things, rugby was an inclusive sport and that was about that.
