Napier's McLean Park is to get a $6.6 million revamp.
New McLean Park Trust Chairman Ross Bramwell says the upgrade ensures the region is capable of hosting large scale national and international outdoor events.
The top priorities are to double the lighting required for televising night rugby and cricket, upgrade the media facilities, and to purchase a super-sopper so the park can continue to host international cricket. It is anticipated these will be in place by April next year.
The biggest cost will be a new 4,600-seat grandstand, complete with corporate boxes and lounges, to replace the McKenzie Stand and to extend the Centennial Stand. The new stand will increase the capacity of McLean Park to 16,000 for rugby and 13,000 for cricket.
The total project is expected to be finished by mid-2007.
