Southern man Brendon McCullum is quitting his home town for a "sexy" business in the Waikato.
The just retired New Zealand cricket captain and his family intend moving to Matamata where his horse syndicate company Vermair is centred.
McCullum still plays Twenty20 cricket around the world, including on a three-year contract with the Brisbane Heat. But as his playing days come to an end, he will shift focus to Vermair which has 18 horses and more than 80 investors. Vermair aims to buy top colts and fillies to "attack the world's biggest races".
"Along the way, we want to make Vermair Racing a sexy, recognisable, funky name in the equine game," McCullum says on the company website.
McCullum told Race Cafe: "I like the idea of moving north to Matamata and settling on our own piece of land. It won't be anything big and I'll probably leave the broodmares and young ones to the experts, but a pony for the kids might be a good idea."
