Para canoe competitor Scott Martlew has qualified second fastest overall for the final of his sprint event on the opening day of the world canoeing championships in Duisburg, Germany.
Christchurch's Martlew, who lost a leg three years ago, is through to his LTA category final tomorrow night (NZT). He clocked 42.126 seconds in finishing second in his 200m heat, then won his semfinal in 41.538, ahead of Australian Brock Ingram, who recorded 41.678.
That time was beaten only by the winner of the other semifinal, Romania's Iulian Serban who produced a time of 41.000.
Former world champion Ben Fouhy is in the K1 1000m heats tonight, followed by Olympic champion Lisa Carrington in her K1 500m discipline, and the K2 500m women, Teneale Hatton and Rachel Dodwell.
