The Miami Marlins took the field today for the first time since the death of pitcher Jose Fernandez and teammate Dee Gordon honoured Fernandez in the perfect way - with a home run in the team's first at bat of the game.
Jose Fernandez, 24, died in a boat accident in Florida, which also claimed the lives of two friends.
The Marlins were back in action today against the New York Mets after yesterday's clash with the Atlanta Braves.
Lead-off hitter Gordon batted right-handed for the opening pitch of Miami's first innings in tribute to Fernandez.
Gordon then he hit a leadoff homer producing emotinal scenes. All the Marlins players are wearing number 16 today to honour Fernandez and stood around an empty pitcher's mound for a moment silence before the game.
