Ryan Shay, 28, died during the US men's Olympic marathon trials in New York after collapsing about 1.6km into the race.
Shay of Flagstaff, Arizona, hit the ground near East 75th Street in Manhattan during the 42km qualifier for the Beijing Games. He was a favourite going into the 2004 trials but was hampered by a hamstring strain.
His wife, Alicia, is also a professional distance runner.
