PERTH - A 49-year-old man has been killed and another man seriously injured in a brawl on a Western Australian beach, involving one family who were playing cricket.
The brawl between two groups of Christmas revellers occurred at about 11pm NZT yesterday at Sunset Beach in Geraldton, north of Perth.
According to police, the 49-year-old and his family were playing cricket yesterday evening, when they were approached by a group of people.
A verbal dispute took place, police said, with the group leaving the scene, only to return later in greater numbers.
The crowd of 10 then attacked the family with beer bottles, rocks and sticks thrown.
During the melee, the 49-year-old was hit in the head with a cricket bat, knocking him unconscious.
His 29-year-old future son-in-law was slashed in the face with a broken bottle, and had his jaw and collarbone broken.
Both were taken to Geraldton Regional Hospital, where the older man died at 2.30am today of serious head injuries.
The 29-year-old is still being treated at the hospital.
He required 35 stitches to his face.
No-one has been arrested over the attack.
