KEY POINTS:
The Herald on Sunday scooped two major awards at the Sir TP McLean National Sports Journalism Awards last week.
Sports editor Paul Lewis won the award for Sports News, with a two-story portfolio from the America's Cup.
"In search of a true Oracle" broke the news that Russell Coutts would sign for Oracle at the end of the America's Cup, while detailing the inside story of Chris Dickson's fall from grace. "Catamaran capers Cup threat" broke the news of Oracle's court action and, more importantly, the intentions behind it.
Lewis' victory in this category continued a Herald on Sunday tradition, with Gregor Paul and Dylan Cleaver winning this category in the past two years.
Cleaver won the award for columnist of the year. His portfolio included a rebuke for then Minister for Sport Trevor Mallard and his antics surrounding the redevelopment of Eden Park. "It's no surprise that wayward Jesse's missing" highlighted the growing frustration at cricket's enfant terrible, Jesse Ryder; while "Why sport needs Hawk-Eye precision" took a look at the increasing use of technology in sport.
It caps a good month for the HoS sports team after Michael Brown won his third successive Football Writer of the Year gong at the New Zealand Football awards.
Tony Smith of The Press won overall sports journalist of the year.
