KEY POINTS:
New Zealand's Steven Ferguson was pipped by Australian Ken Wallace in the K1 500m final at the Oceania kayaking championships in Sydney yesterday.
Wallace made it a double, after winning the K1 1000m final last week, by edging out Ferguson on the line at the Sydney International Regatta Centre. New Zealand's Ben Fouhy was fourth.
New Zealand's Erin Taylor finished fourth in the women's K1 500m final, won by Australian Chantal Meek. Taylor missed out on qualifying for the Olympics on Wednesday when she was beaten by Australian Alana Nicholls.
There was more disappointment for New Zealand at the nearby Penrith Whitewater Stadium when Michael Dawson missed qualifying for Beijing in the men's K1 slalom. Dawson qualified for the final but three Australians, Anthony Brown, Warwick Draper and William Forsythe, all finished higher to win Australia an Olympic spot.
