But for all the educated guessing that was going on, Hayne himself rarely had a voice in the debate. As he prepares to make a case for selection in the Fiji squad that will fly to Brazil, the former NSW custodian has revealed it would be impossible for anyone to truly know what his future has in store, because he himself doesn't have a clue.
"They've got no idea because I've got no idea," Hayne told Fairfax Media.
A return to rugby league has always been on the cards in most people's minds, but with his recent sporting expeditions taking him to places like the US and the South Pacific, it appears the Hayne Plane has caught the travel bug.
"I definitely like being able to travel, seeing the world," Hayne told The Daily Telegraph.
"And I realise now with my skill set, it enables me to do that. Gives me a lot of options. That's the biggest thing for me now.
"I like my red wine, so maybe the south of France. But I also like sushi, so it could be Japan," he said in reference to pursuing the 15-man game abroad.
Whatever the future holds, it will have to wait until after his Rugby Sevens fate is sealed. Debuting at last month's event in London - where he played roughly 15 minutes during the whole weekend - Hayne admitted he wasn't physically prepared for the seven-a-side format.
"Physically, I definitely wasn't in Sevens shape. We all knew that and Ben (Fiji coach Ben Ryan) knew that. I wasn't concerned about doing my thing over there, it was more about getting a feel for the game," Hayne told Fairfax Media.
And while he's doing everything in his power to impress Ryan and convince him he deserves a shot to chase his latest dream, should that not eventuate, don't expect Hayne to go and sulk in a corner.
"For me it's a win-win. Whether I make it or don't, at least I can pass on the experience and get the boys either ready for Rio or be a part of it myself.
I'm not guaranteed tomorrow but I'll do my best today. You have to enjoy the journey in your life more than the destination. The success is in the sacrifice."
