Indoor Bowls: Defending champions qualify

Defending champions Les Hazelton, Diane Hazelton, Elaine Eccles (Fire Brigade Club, Tauranga) qualified for post-section play in the triples at the national chmapionship in Taupo yesterday.

They won their first game 7-5 against Barrie Sturgess (Nelson) but dropped their second, to Gordon McIvor (Manawatu) 12-1, which meant they had to win their last two to progress further.

They went on to beat Mary Wakefield (Auckland) 8-6 and Richard Thompson (Bay of Plenty) 9-8.

McIvor and Thompson also qualified.

Notable combinations to miss out were Auckland's Grant Harvey, John Frelan and Paul Psaila, Nelson's Nigel Warnes, Richard Verdonk, and Hayden Warnes, Upper Hutt Valley's Ivan Barr, Ian Wheeler and Annette Barr, and Hawkes Bay's Rod Fleming, Sue Fleming and Carol Wilkinson.
