KEY POINTS:
We've already covered the impressive engine, handling and ambience of BMW's 1 Series diesel coupe. But we didn't put it to the ultimate real-world test - fill it with people and luggage for an off-the-cuff airport run.
The coupe's 370-litre boot is bigger than it looks, larger than the current Corolla hatch and close to Ford's Focus in size.
But you can't load a coupe to the windowline, and the luggage does pile up. Especially when your passengers are a mum, a 1.9m dad, a baby in her seat and all their assorted luggage and paraphernalia for their three-week sojourn to Europe.
It takes a little juggling. Footwells and laps are pressed into use, and the boot doesn't fit a pushchair as the space is too narrow. But otherwise we are impressed.
Okay, you wouldn't buy a vehicle like this if you regularly carry loads.
But the moral is, don't let a car's compact size put you off if family errands may occasionally intrude.
Choose both the car (and your relatives) carefully, and those unexpected luggage-laden trips may still be possible.
