WAIKATO
The big guns ran up cricket scores in the quarter-final round of the Waikato-King Country first XV competition at the weekend.
Hamilton Boys were too strong for Forest View, winning 80-0.
St Pauls beat Fraser High 54-5 - with standout No 8 Thomas Scheres racing 50 metres for a try, a repeat of his feats against Church College a week earlier.
Church College beat Cambridge 47-18 and St Johns held off a strong challenge from Matamata to win 20-6.
This week's semifinals see Hamilton Boys take on Church College and St Pauls host St Johns.
Other results in the region included Hamilton Boys Second XV beating Tokoroa in the Thames Valley competition.
AUCKLAND
Macleans College are having a remarkable run in the 1A first XV competition considering it's their first year in the big time.
They scored their third win of the season with a 35-15 victory over Kings, the first game at home for the east Auckland side.
Around 500 spectators watched the David Hornblow-led Macleans, who are now on 13 points - just five behind leaders Auckland Grammar (18) and two behind Mt Albert and Kelston.
The only loss for Macleans College, who are coached by Johnson Davis, was a close 11-14 against Mt Albert Grammar in the first game of the season.
There are no games this weekend with the national secondary schools sevens tournament being held in Wellington. Mt Albert and De La Salle College will represent the Auckland region.
Multisport
Anna Hamilton's third in the world duathlon in Geel, Belgium, gives Rangitoto College something of a grand record with the school having placings at the champs in three of the past four years.
Hamilton, the only Southern Hemisphere athlete to achieve a podium finish, and Bruce Hunter (Macleans), who finished 17th, will both take part in the Auckland Duathlon champs next week at Maraetai, just a week after returning from Belgium.
Soccer
Westlake lead with four wins from four and 12 points, three ahead of Mt Albert Grammar and Auckland Grammar. But Auckland Grammar still have a game in hand after the latest A1 results.
Westlake thrashed Kelston 6-0.
The other big winner was Rangitoto, who had their first success of the season with a 3-0 victory over bottom placed Avondale.
Cycling
The senior boys' race of the waterfront road series produced an upset when power-house Auckland Grammar had a rider fall at the turn, costing them any chance of victory and forcing them to fifth place.
St Kentigern A had little difficulty securing the win after this recording 21m 08s to beat Westlake A followed by St Kentigern B and the two Grammar teams.
Netball
Ngaruawahia caused the upset of the round with a 39-30 victory over Hillcrest in the Monday night round at the Hamilton Netball Centre.
Other winners included Church College, 49-27 over Taumarunui, and Te Awamutu College who scored a 53-28 win over Cambridge High.
Wrestling
Hamilton hosts the New Zealand Secondary Schools champs this Saturday with Kelston and Dilworth rated the schools to beat. They will be on the lookout for Rotorua Boys, who made a big impact last year.
Wrestling starts at 9am at the Te Rapa Sportsdrome.
Lacrosse
The inaugural girls' high school league has started with two divisions, one for the more experienced schools and the second for schools new to the sport. Auckland Grammar lead the first division with Westlake close behind.
The other teams in the first division are Avondale College and St Dominic's College.
The second division is made up of Pinehurst, Western Springs College as well as the B teams from the first division schools.
