CRICKET
The main match of round four of Waikato first XI cricket was the local derby between St Peter's and Cambridge High.
St Peter's School were the holders of the Dave Hoskin Trophy and also had history on their side - their first XI had never lost to Cambridge.
Good line and length bowling from Cambridge's Nick Feast, who took 3 for 25, kept St Peter's to a score of 160 for 8.
New Zealand under-17 player Keith Vincent was in his first match of the term for Cambridge after playing for Waikato Country Districts in the premier men's club competition.
Vincent and Feast took the score to 80 in the 26th over.
The breakthrough came when Feast was stumped by wicketkeeper Ben Broadbent off the bowling of off-spinner Scott Mongston for 23.
On the next ball, Vincent was caught by Chris Sclater in the covers off Nick Clayton's bowling.
James McKay then proved to be a thorn in St Peter's side, being dropped three times before guiding his team to victory with a match-winning four in the last over. McKay, 38 not out, was the hero of the day and Cambridge High now have the Dave Hoskin trophy.
St Paul's Collegiate second XI and Hamilton Boys third XI continued their rivalry with a remarkable tie.
Both teams scored 153 all out, and both will need good performances in the next two weeks if they are to make the semifinals.
Matamata beat Fraser by 39 runs but the loss was caused by some disastrous batting by Fraser.
Fraser put Matamata in to bat and soon had them in trouble.
Chris Wise bowled well to take 6 for 15 off 10 overs. Only an eighth-wicket partnership of 40 between Andrew Tiddy (28) and Alan Swetman (11) took Matamata to any respectability at 94.
Fraser started disastrously, and at one stage had lost six wickets for 17 runs,
Paul Wright took 3 for 12 and Fraser self-destructed for a disappointing 54 to give Matamata their fourth win.
Previously unbeaten Morrinsville lost to Te Awamutu by 100 runs.
Te Awamutu scored 190, and Morrinsville fell cheaply for 90, Hamish Forsman finishing with figures of 4 for 23.
In the other game, Hillcrest beat St John's by seven wickets.
