KEY POINTS:
Westlake BHS's comfortable 80-run win over St Kentigern in the R.H. Marryatt Cup final at Cornwall Park added a fourth cricket trophy to their already bulging cabinet.
The school are already the one and two-day champions and represented Auckland at last year's Gillette Cup in Palmerston North. WBHS batted first after winning the toss.
After reaching 39 without loss, they were soon in trouble at 58/4 before the innings was turned around by Craig Cachopa and Callum Edwards, who added an unbeaten 91-run partnership, including 75 runs in the last 10 overs. Cachopa was 113 not out as WBHS posted an impressive 238/6.##In reply, St Kentigern too reached 39 without loss but they then lost wickets regularly to slump to 89/8 before the last two wickets added 69 runs.
VOLLEYBALL
McAuley High scored a straight-sets win over Avondale College in the final of the Auckland ss championships.
The 25-23, 25-14, 25-19 win by McAuley over the young Avondale team completed a remarkable three-peat for the Margaret Lafaele-led side.
The boys championship produced a first-time winner however with Rangitoto College upsetting favourites De La Salle in four sets.
In the girls final, Avondale took an early lead but McAuley, making the most of some strong play from Lafaele (who was later named tournament MVP), fought back to win a see-saw first set 25-23.
The second and third sets were not as close, although Avondale did rally late in the third to put the champions under pressure.
The boys final was a replay of the round one premier league clash won by De La Salle.
Rangitoto hit the floor running and quickly took a five-point lead with strong games at the net from Matt Graham and Johann Trimmer while Tom Kearns produced some good setting options.
De La Salle were handicapped by the loss of young star Junior Ualesi, who was hindered by an ankle injury and subbed off.
Down a set, De La Salle hit back strongly to take the second set 25-19 and then went out to a 12-9 lead in the third before Rangitoto won eight points in a row and eventually the set 25-21. The fourth set was all Rangitoto as they closed it out 25-9 before joining their supporters to celebrate their first Auckland senior title.
