For test hookers who play such key roles in the dynamic and often chaotic worlds of lineouts and scrums, timing is everything. Dane Coles, who has quickly become the All Blacks' best in the position, hopes that co-ordination also applies to the birth of his first child.
Coles and his partner Sarah are expecting a son on October 1. The 27-year-old has already decided not to travel to Johannesburg for the test against the Springboks on October 5, leaving the way clear for Nathan Harris to probably make his debut.
A birth around the due date or after would be fine for Coles, but there could be a few nervous moments while he is Buenos Aires for the test against the Pumas on September 27.
"Hopefully he's not born while I'm over there. I'm pretty nervous but it's exciting at the same time," Coles said as he prepares to play Argentina in Napier tomorrow.
"From a personal sense, it was an easy decision to make [to miss the Springboks test] but when I look at the rugby side of things, it's a tough one to swallow, I suppose. But I've got no regrets about it, my decision has been made."
