Anna Lawrence is intent on reviving her position as one of New Zealand's most influential hockey players.
A long rest, a move from Canterbury to Auckland and a career opportunity have all helped to lure the world-class midfielder back to the artificial turf for the four-test series against India next month.
There was plenty to mull over for Lawrence during her six-month break. Ten years dedicated to international hockey had ended in heartbreak - and thoughts of retirement - after the Sydney Olympics in September.
Lawrence did not pick up her stick again until early March, and now feels refreshed physically and mentally.
"It's really nice to have a big break from the game and to reassess where you're at and if you've still got something to contribute," she said.
Lawrence is not looking beyond this year, which looms as an important one.
Following the India series, New Zealand play a three-test home series against Olympic champions Australia in July, followed by the elite Champions Trophy tournament in Holland in August.
"It's been refreshing coming back in - you actually forget what it's like to be in the team for the first time," Lawrence said, referring to the enthusiasm that had rubbed off from the newer players.
