KEY POINTS:
New Zealand's Black Sticks set a world record in thrashing Papua New Guinea 39-0 in their Oceania men's hockey match at Buderim, Queensland, last night.
The record broke one set only 24 hours earlier by Australia when they beat the same team 35-0.
The Black Sticks showed the gulf in class by racing to a 20-0 lead at halftime, and continued the onslaught in the second half.
In a rare achievement, Simon Child reached double figures on his own with 11 goals, while striker Phil Burrows scored eight and Hayden Shaw seven.
Dave Kosoof and Jan Peterson were next best with three goals apiece.
It gets more serious for New Zealand tomorrow when they play world No 2 Australia before meeting them again in the tournament final on Sunday which will decide automatic qualification for next year's Beijing Olympics.
