New Zealand opened a four-nation women's hockey tournament with a 1-1 draw against hosts China in Beijing last night (NZT).
Goalkeeper Anita Waiwatai had an outstanding match, keeping New Zealand in the game with a string of brilliant saves including one off a penalty stroke in the 14th minute.
Influential defender Lizzy Igasan also played a big role in breaking up attacks by China, team manager Debbie Balme said.
After a scoreless first half, China opened their account in the 51st minute.
Five minutes later, forward Charlotte Harrison equalised with a field goal.
It was a promising start for New Zealand who came into the tournament with a record of 13 defeats, a win and a draw in their last 15 matches.
New Zealand were to play their second match of the tournament against Spain today at 7.30pm (NZT). Their final match is against Japan on Sunday followed by placing matches on Monday.
