Japan have turned down an invitation to play four tests against the New Zealand men's Commonwealth Games team.
New Zealand hockey chiefs have now turned to South Korea, India and Malaysia in their efforts to assure the team of a solid Games build-up.
The other three countries - all of whom are to play a four-nation tournament in Australia - have been made aware of New Zealand's desire to have games here.
"We are now hoping one or two countries will take up the offer. We could now have one team here for two tests before the Australian tournament [from June 3 to 16] and another for two after it has finished. Or, maybe, four tests against one team after the tournament."
South Korea would be especially welcome. The 2000 Olympic silver medallists, who finished fourth in the just-ended World Cup, have never played here.
All countries have been asked to reply to this latest invitation within seven days.
New Zealand coach Kevin Towns is expected to name about 25 players within two weeks for trials from which the Commonwealth squad of 16 will be selected.
The New Zealand women will have a solid build-up. Coach Jan Borren has named 30 players for Games trials in Auckland early next month.
After the April 6-13 trials, the New Zealand team will play four tests against the United States from May 11 to 18 in Dunedin, Oamaru, Ashburton and Christchurch.
Trialists: Sandy Bennett, Helen Clarke, Leisen Jobe, Meredith Orr, Jaimee Provan, Karen Syddall, Lisa Walton (Auckland), Lisa Bishop, Caryn Paewai, Suzie Pearce, Niniwa Roberts, Rachel Robertson, Rachel Sutherland, Diana Weavers (Wellington), Amanda Christie, Nikki Grimwood, Anne-Marie Irving, Penny Munns, Kate Saunders, Michelle Turner, Carol Ward (Canterbury), Tara Dysdale, Piki Hamahona, Sheree Phillips, Melody Rowe, Moira Senior, Anita Wawatai (Manawatu), Paula Enoka, Lizzy Igasan (North Harbour), Colleen Gubb-Suddaby (Otago).
