AMSTERDAM - New Zealand failed to turn domination into goals and had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Spain at the Champions Trophy women's hockey tournament in Amsterdam yesterday.
They lost their opening match to Australia 1-5 and next face hosts Holland tomorrow (NZT).
Coach Jan Borren said New Zealand dominated for long periods but Spain often looked dangerous.
He questioned the Spaniards' regular use of bodychecking, but he was impressed with the way the match officials policed it.
Spain took the early lead in the match with a goal in the 17th minute through Monica Rueda following a scramble in the circle. New Zealand struggled in defence and at times their communication was abysmal.
Midway through the half the Kiwis drew level when Suzie Pearce put away a penalty corner move.
New Zealand could not capitalise on a number of second-half scoring opportunities.
