The New Zealand women's hockey team has held of a strong second half challenge from hosts South Africa to win the final of the Champions Challenge 2-1.
Two first half goals were enough for the Black Sticks to take the title in Capetown this morning (NZT).
They started slowly but picked up momentum in the first spell, controlling the ball well and steadily increasing their share of ball possession, the tournament website reported.
After 17 minutes Anita Punt pushed the ball over the line in a crowded circle.
As halftime approached, New Zealand took complete control of the match. Shortly before the break Clarissa Eshuis converted a penalty corner with a low flick, extending the lead to two goals.
In the second half South Africa returned with renewed vigour and the game became more physical as they fought to turn the match around.
With 15 minutes on the clock New Zealand's Charlotte Harrison picked up a yellow card.
However, in her absence South Africa failed to convert a penalty corner chance when Farah Fredericks tried a reverse stick shot that went wide.
In the 64th minute South Africa was able to get on the board with Kate Woods converting a penalty corner with a low flick.
Despite being spurred on by the home crowd the South Africans could not put away the elusive equalizer that would have kept their hopes of victory alive.
With the tournament win New Zealand has secured their place in the prestigious Champions Trophy tournament, which will be held in July 2010 in Nottingham in England.
Score: South Africa - New Zealand 1-2, Halftime 0-2.
