The New Zealand men's hockey team began their Four Nations tournament campaign in England yesterday with a 3-1 loss to Germany.
The New Zealanders conceded three quick goals after halftime at Nottingham before scoring a consolation goal to Wellington midfielder Blair Hilton in the 61st minute.
The other countries at Nottingham are Great Britain and New Zealand's opponent tomorrow, Japan.
They are using the tournament to prepare for the Champions Trophy tournament, which starts in Germany on July 31.
New Zealand held Germany scoreless in a first half marked by near misses on goal by both teams and three unsuccessful penalty corner chances for the Germans.
Field goals to Benedikt Frk, Florian Fuchs and Christoph Menke early in the second half came as a result of defensive errors in New Zealand's circle.
Germany fell away in the last quarter, and New Zealand got on the scoresheet when Hilton deflected a shot into the goal at the right post off a cross from captain Shea McAleese.
New Zealand coach Shane McLeod said his team were on a learning curve as he trialled young players with an eye on the 2012 London Olympics and beyond.
In yesterday's other match, Britain overcame a resurgent Japan 6-4.
