Herald on Sunday sports editor Paul Lewis was named supreme sports journalist of the year at the Terry McLean National Sports Journalism Awards last night, capping off a successful night for the senior Herald journalist.
Lewis won the adidas Award for sports feature - print and also collected the NZOC award for sports column opinion for his columns on the America's Cup in San Francisco. He was was also made a Life Member of the Association.
Senior Herald photographer Brett Phibbs won the Nikon award for best community/sport/recreation/adventure portfolio while Cameron Leslie of the Northern Advocate won the New Zealand Herald DJ Cameron young writer award along with the CBL Insurance outstanding provincial journalist award, capping off a strong showing by APN titles.
Herald on Sunday and Radio Sport reporter Andrew Alderson won the award for sports broadcasting in radio. The Sir John Wells sports journalism scholarships, were awarded to Kris Shannon of APNZ and Kimberlee Downs of TVNZ.
The Sport New Zealand lifetime contribution to sport through journalism award went to Gary Ahern of Radio New Zealand, one of New Zealand's most respected broadcasters who has covered almost all professional golf tournaments in New Zealand in the past 30 years and has been Morning Report's Sports reporter for over 15 years.
