KEY POINTS:
Seventy-three nominations are being considered for the 2006 Halberg Awards.
New Zealand's premier sports awards, saluting outstanding achievement by New Zealanders in sport both at home and overseas over a calendar period, will be held in Auckland on February 15.
There are 21 nominations for the Sportsman award category, 22 Sportswoman, 18 Team and 12 nominations for Coach of the Year.
A new category, the Emerging Talent Award has been added to the awards and this received 21 nominations.
The finalists in four categories will not be announced until early next month so late performances by individual athletes or teams this year can be considered by the Academy.
From those 12 finalists, the Voting Academy selects one, by secret ballot, to receive the supreme accolade for sporting excellence, the Halberg Award.
