KEY POINTS:
Turning dreams into reality is the aim of a new category in the Halberg Awards.
An award for emerging talent will be presented for the first time to a team or individual at the ceremony next year.
The awards, which will now be known as the Westpac Halberg Awards after the announcement of a three-year partnership with Westpac New Zealand, will be held in February.
Halberg Trust chief executive Graeme Taylor said the aim of the new award was to try to identify and help young athletes in their quest to become Olympic and world champions and one day even win the supreme Halberg Award.
Unlike the other categories, which are judged solely on performances over the previous 12 months, the emerging-talent award looks ahead.
"It is not just about picking winners, it is about selecting young people with the winning attitude and all that entails," Taylor said.
The award winner will receive a $25,000 scholarship.
