Google Trends have released their annual 'Year in Search' for 2017 and we've compiled the top 10 sporting events that were Googled by New Zealanders this year.
10. Australian Open 2017
The tennis tournament took place in Melbourne Park in January and was the first Grand Slam tournament of the year.
'The Australian Open 2017' peaked in Google search popularity in late January this year and Taranaki residents searched the term higher than any other sub-region in the country.
Roger Federer won his 18th men's singles and Serena Williams overcame her sister Venus in the women's singles final.
'US Open 2017 Tennis' was the ninth highest sporting event Google search of 2017 in New Zealand, peaking in early September when the tournament took place.
Rafael Nadal won the men's final, while the women's singles tournament saw Sloane Stephens triumph.

Between July and August 'Mayweather vs McGregor' rose as a popular Google search across the country.
Floyd Mayweather beat Conor McGregor in what was known as "The Money Fight" and Gisborne took the top spot generating the highest amount of searches in New Zealand on the highly-anticipated fight.
7. Rugby League World Cup
'Rugby League World Cup' came in at number seven on the list. It was the fifteenth staging of the Cup and took place in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea between October 27th and December 2nd 2017.
The Google search maintained consistency over the running months with a particular re-peak following the Tonga vs England match after a controversial game-deciding try was not reviewed.
6. Bathurst 2017

The Supercars Championship was held at the start of October and peaked on Google searches between October 8th and 14th.
The race was won by David Reynolds and Luke Youlden.
Aucklanders googled the event 50 percent more than in any other sub-region in the country.
4. Wimbledon 2017
Hawke's Bay produced the most Google searches as Roger Federer cruised to his record-breaking eighth Wimbledon title, becoming the first man in the open era to win the event without dropping a set. On the women's side, Spain's Garbine Muguruza won the second Grand Slam title of her career.
