Last year's PGA Championship winner is introduced to Cota and he proceeds to give her a golf ball from his pocket.
Cota's gets the first inkling that this was far from a chance meeting when she notices the question "Will You?" scribbled on the ball.
Cota turns around to see Powell on one knee with a ring. After an excited "Yes!" Thomas jpoins the couple for a couple of pictures.
Powell's engagement plan reportedly hatched months before when he sent Thomas a direct message on Instagram – and he responded within minutes.
"I wanted to do this and was like, 'Well, I'm going to go for my favorite golfer,' " Powell told the New York Post.
"I sent him a message and about five minutes later he responded back and said, 'I'll help you out.' So I was scheming with him and [the PGA Tour] for two months on how we were going to set it up and do it. I couldn't be more happy with the outcome.''
The couple, from From Sioux Falls in South Dakota, got to spend some time with Thomas after the round.
The 25-year-old has some decent form heading into the Wells Fargo, having finished tied 17th at the Masters in April.
And yes, he has been invited to the wedding.
