In a dramatic 24 hours of golf, Ryan Fox has done enough to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics. Fox has snuck ahead of Michael Hendry in amazing circumstances to make the International Golf Federation qualification standard and will now wait for the New Zealand Olympic Committee to decide his fate.
After two years of fighting for the one remaining position behind New Zealand number one Danny Lee, it all came down to one round of golf on the European Challenge Tour.
"Im pretty happy, it was a bit of a nervy wait this afternoon and we were hoping the maths was right too. I left it a little late on the back nine but happy to hit some good shots under pressure," said Fox.
Hendry once again put together a great week on the Japan Tour finishing fourth last night to apply the pressure on Fox. This meant he needed to finish in a tie for seventh or better to hold on to the second Rio spot.
In typical Fox fashion he did what was required, but with style. After 13 holes he was sitting just one under par before going back to back eagles on the 14th and 15th hole to rocket his way to Rio.
"Mike has played some very impressive golf over the last few weeks to make it a great little battle between us and I'm sure he's going to get his second win in Japan soon."
As mentioned, Foxs ticket to Rio is not yet a certainty. While Fox has done all he can do, the final decision is now in the hands of the New Zealand Olympic Committee who will confirm his selection on Monday 18 July.
