Keeping it simple is paying off for New Zealander Steve Alker at the New Zealand Golf Open in Arrowtown, whether intentionally or not.
Alker heads into today's third round at nine under par, just one shot off the lead, alone in third place, behind American Jeff Gove and Australian Jason Norris.
He shot a second round five under par 67 and says the key was sticking to an uncomplicated game plan.
"I'm trying to make as many birdies as I can. Especially on the holes where I have opportunities to take advantage."
Alker was also forced to keep things simple when his caddy had to pull out due to injury.
Fellow New Zealander Josh Geary is also in good shape at seven under par heading into the third round, while Grant Waite, David Smail and Michael Long also made the cut.
