Love initially was not keen on taking the place of Stewart, who was killed in a plane crash. In today's finale, Love plays PGA champion Tiger Woods, who pulled away on the back nine to beat British Open champion Paul Lawrie 3 and 2.
Kronfeld on loose
All Black Josh Kronfeld's book On The Loose has been so successful it has almost sold out throughout New Zealand. The popular flanker, who has written a frank account of the life of a top-level rugby player, has been met by queues of people waiting for autographs in bookshops around the country during his promotional tour.
Burns returns
Richard Burns joined a select group of drivers who have won the British Rally twice in a row as his rivals fell foul of the Welsh forests and mountain roads yesterday. Burns also secured the runners-up slot in the world championship behind Finn Tommi Makinen, who retired at the end of the 19th stage with engine trouble.
Running campaign
The runner of the world's fastest marathon, Khalid Khannouchi, of Morocco, hopes to jog with President Clinton to help his bid to change his citizenship and represent the United States at next year's Sydney Olympics. Khannouchi, who shattered the world's best time by an astonishing 23s in Chicago last month in only his third marathon, has an American wife and has lived in the United States for more than six years. Administrative problems have delayed his citizenship application.
Blatter no-show
Fifa president Sepp Blatter will be a notable absentee at Saturday's final of the world under-17 soccer championship at North Harbour Stadium. Regarded as one of the most powerful men in world sport, Blatter is at his Swiss home recovering from the flu but is expected in Tokyo next week for the preliminary draw of the 2002 World Cup.
