New Zealand's amateur fortunes took another leap yesterday when Palmerston North lefthander Tim Wilkinson won the country's second amateur title on foreign soil in less than a fortnight.
Wilkinson shot an even-par 72 yesterday for a four-round score of nine-under 279 to clinch the Singapore championship.
His nearest challenger was another lefthander, Wellingtonian Gareth Paddison, who early this month won the Canadian amateur title in Toronto.
Paddison closed with 69 yesterday for 283.
Wilkinson and Paddison combined to win the teams title by a remarkable 19 strokes.
It was a significant step up for Wilkinson, who early this year finished second in the Malaysian amateur championship and the Australian national trial in Brisbane.
