Golf: Wellington's international tournament canned

Next February's Cloud Nine New Zealand women's golf classic, due to be held in Wellington, has been cancelled.

Plans to stage the $650,000 event have collapsed over the last few days, forcing the Ladies European Tour to can the tournament.

Tour officials say they were left with no other choice when Wellington promoter Frank Burgess contacted them to say he had failed to raise the required money, and they are now seeking legal advice.

Several players may also be left out of pocket, with a number having already booked non-refundable airline tickets.

The event was set to be the richest golf tournament ever held in New Zealand.
