Rotorua schoolboys Sam Hunt and Mathew Holten won the foursomes title at the national amateur golf championships in Mt Maunganui yesterday.
The pair, who leave for England with their Rotorua Boys' High School team next week to defend their world secondary schools title, shot a six-under 138 over the 36 holes.
They finished one shot clear of New Zealand's leading amateurs, Eddie Burgess, of Tauranga, and Gareth Paddison, of Wellington.
Hunt, aged 16, and Holten, 17, shot a one-under 71 in the morning, then a 67 in the afternoon.
Burgess and Paddison, who shot 72 in the morning, reached seven-under, but bogeys at the 17th and 18th cost them the title.
The strokeplay championships start today with 117 players, including eight from Australia. The matchplay starts on Thursday.
