New Zealand golfer Michael Campbell has made a solid start to the United States Open, carding a one over 71 on the difficult Pinehurst course.
Campbell was five shots adrift of American leader Brandt Jobe , who still had four holes to play when the New Zealander completed his round.
Defending champion Retief Goosen of South Africa was in the clubhouse at two-under, Tiger Woods shot an even-par 70, while Masters champion Phil Mickleson was one-under.
With several players still on the course Campbell was well-placed, in a tie for 18th.
Campbell finished with a one-over in the first nine after a bogey each on the second hole, the sixth and seventh but birdied the second and eighth.
He made his third birdie of the round on the 13th but cancelled that credit on the next hole with a bogey.
