New Zealand golfer David Smail scorched around the Castle Hill Country Club in Sydney yesterday and emerged as the greatest challenge to leader Paul Gow's defence of his $A550,000 ($696,000) Canon Challenge title.
Smail shot the round of the day, an eight-under 64, and displayed much of the touch that took him to victory in last weekend's New Zealand Open in Auckland.
He is second on 133, 11 under, and while that is still four shots behind Gow, he made up five strokes on the New South Welshman, who opened with an Australasian Tour record of 60 on Thursday but managed a patchy 69 yesterday.
Queenslander Kenny Druce was a shot behind Smail in third place, while Australians Stephen Leaney and Rodney Pampling and Americans David Gossett and Jim Benepe were another shot back.
Six other New Zealanders made the cut - Matthew Lane on 137, Paul Devenport and Mark Brown on 139, Richard Lee and Marcus Wheelhouse on 141 and Steve Alker on 142.
