KEY POINTS:
SYDNEY - New Zealand's top-ranked golfer David Smail put himself in contention for the Moonah Classic title with a second round of four-under-par 68 in Melbourne today.
It left Smail five-under at the halfway point, three strokes behind early clubhouse leader Michael Sim, of Australia, with the afternoon starters just teeing off in the US$600,000 ($1.18 million) Nationwide Tour and Australasian Tour co-sanctioned event.
Smail shot 71 yesterday and made an eventful start to his morning round at Moonah Links today with a birdie and a bogey on his first two holes.
The bogey was a solitary blemish as he recorded five birdies in all.
Last weekend's Johnnie Walker Classic winner Danny Lee was among the afternoon starters after shooting 74 yesterday.
