KEY POINTS:
A fourth consecutive round in the 60s marked a happy Australasian return for New Zealand golfer David Smail, who finished sixth in the A$1.2 million ($1.38 million) Australian PGA Championship in Queensland yesterday.
In his first tournament back from the Japanese Tour, Smail carded a final round three-under 69 to finish on 15-under 273 at Coolum, seven shots behind Australians Peter Lonard and Nick O'Hern, who went to a playoff.
Lonard and left-hander O'Hern posted matching 68s in regulation before O'Hern chipped in from a bunker for a birdie on the fourth extra hole to win the playoff.
Smail was one shot clear of last week's New Zealand Open champion Nathan Green, having missed his home tournament to compete in the Nippon Series JT Cup in Tokyo where he finished tied for fourth.
Of the other New Zealanders, Brad Iles finished tied for 37th on four-under 284 after a final round of 70 and Tony Christie was tied for 54th, five shots further back.
