Golf: Smail best of the Kiwis at US Open

Doug Batty's shot a four over par first round 74, equal with Tiger Woods and inside the projected cut at Bethpage Black.

Double bogeys at 12 and 13 have been Batty's biggest setbacks. He is back on the course straight away for the second round.

David Smail has produced a birdie-birdie finish for an even par first round 70. That is six shots off the first round leader Mike Weir. Michael Campbell shot a seven-over par 77.
