New Zealand golfer Jae An has made a poor start in his bid to qualify for the PGA Tour, firing a seven-over 79 in an Alabama qualifying tournament.

An managed just one birdie, six bogeys and a double bogey in the opening round to lie in a tie for 49.

After four rounds about 20 players will advance from the tournament to the four-round second stage of qualifying, from November 18-21.
