KEY POINTS:
SYDNEY - Queensland golfer John Senden won the A$1.5 million ($1.75 million) Australian Open by one stroke yesterday after a superb final round at Royal Sydney.
He shot a seven-under 65, the best round of the week, to claim the A$270,000 first prize and add his name to the prestigious Stonehaven Cup.
Senden, 35, who won his first PGA Tour title in the United States at the John Deere Classic in July, birdied the final two holes to finish at eight-under 280 and claim victory ahead of US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy.
Senden hit his six iron approach shot to 1.5m on the 18th green and overcame a bout of nerves to sink the putt that sealed victory.
"I was shaking a little bit on that last putt, but it went in," he said.
Ogilvy, who ended with a 68, missed a 4.5m birdie putt on the last that would have put him in a playoff, instead finishing outright second at seven-under 281.
Former Australian Open champion Stuart Appleby bogeyed the 18th after his tee shot missed the green, for a round of 68 to finish equal third at six-under alongside Gavin Coles.
Adam Scott carded a final round 70 to finish at five-under in a share of fifth place with Nathan Green.
Greg Norman fired 74 to end possibly his final appearance in an Australasian Tour event in equal 26th position at six-over.
The veteran received an enormous ovation as he walked off the 18th green.
