SYDNEY - Richard Best finished second in the strokeplay and, remarkably, seven New Zealanders qualified for matchplay at the Australian amateur golf championships at the Tasmania Golf Club in Hobart yesterday.
Best again displayed his skills in gusty conditions, shooting an even par 72 to remain two-over-par after four rounds with a total of 290.
Other leaders fell away except New South Welshman Warwick Dew, whose 68 yesterday took him to the top with 287.
Seven of the eight New Zealanders entered in the original 250-strong field finished in the top 32 and advanced to today's matchplay.
The next best New Zealander was Carl Brooking in 17th place on 295. Gareth Paddison was a shot back after carding a 67, while Craig Choi, who travelled as an individual after missing national team selection, also finished on 296 and Eddie Burgess was a further stroke behind.
Brad Shilton and Eddie Lee both ended on 298 in a tie for 31st. They entered a six-way playoff for two spots and snared them both.
It is the biggest number of New Zealanders to qualify for the Australian championship title.
New Zealand Golf Association chief executive Phil Aickin was delighted with the depth of New Zealand's challenge entering the matchplay.
"To go to Australia, where we know they have some of the world's best amateurs, and do so well is very encouraging."
