ASHBURTON - Rotorua's Penny Newbrook capitalised on an excellent morning round to win the strokeplay title by four shots at the New Zealand under-21 women's golf championships at the Ashburton Golf Club yesterday.
Newbrook hit an early round of 75 on the par-72 course to take a one-shot advantage over her nearest rival, Teiria Te Riini, of Kawerau.
A second round of 79 was easily enough for her to take the strokeplay title with a combined score of 154.
Three golfers tied for second place with combined scores of 158, Natalie McDonald, of the Pines, Sarah Nicholson, of Wainuiomata, and Te Riini.
The matchplay championships start today. The top 16 today qualified for the matchplay.
Other championship qualifiers: Selina Moon (Otago), Annie Wairepo (Redwood Park), Roseanne Coulter (Foxton), Natalie Storck (North Shore), Kyla Welsh (Timaru), Aimee Keelan (Gisborne Park), Stacey Tate (Huapai), Tanie Braddock (Eketahuna), Namita Karl (Hutt), Shannon Pawhau (Ngaruawahia).
