SHANGHAI - American world golf No 2 Phil Mickelson snatched a dramatic victory at the HSBC Champions here on Sunday after a three-way playoff against Britons Ross Fisher and Lee Westwood.
The three-times major winner, who at one stage in the day had a five-stroke lead, sank a four-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to win his first tournament in Asia.
Mickelson and Fisher both blew chances to win the US$5 million ($6.5 million) tournament in regulation on a farcical first trip to the 18th and that let in Westwood, who hit six birdies in seven holes after the turn for a 67 to go 10-under.
Asia's richest tournament is co-sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours, the PGA Tour of Australasia, South Africa's Sunshine Tour and the China Golf Association.
