Phil Mickelson's win in the US Masters and David Duval's exit will have rekindled memories for those who watched the Eisenhower Trophy at Christchurch in 1990.
Both were promising young amateurs in the United States team who finished second equal with New Zealand in the world amateur championship won by Sweden.
Mickelson holed a long putt across the green on the final hole of the Shirley course to grab that share of second place for the Americans after the Kiwis, Steven Alker, Michael Long, Grant Moorhead and Brent Patterson, had posted their total.
Duval played in a second Eisenhower at Vancouver in 1992, when New Zealand won. He rose to be world number one in the professional ranks before fading. Mickelson seems headed to the same peak.
