JACKSONVILLE - Davis Love III cautiously admitted that golf's President's Cup event did not have the same aura as the Ryder Cup and that some of his team-mates do not even want to play in it, following the drama of the United States' win over Europe last month.
The excitement, the passion and the pressure - yes, even the boorish behaviour by the Boston gallery - exposed the Ryder Cup as the greatest spectacle in golf, one of the greatest events in all sports.
And it might have exposed the President's Cup as, well, just an exhibition.
"Whew, I have to be careful here," said Love when asked how the US-International team compared to the clash with the Europeans.
Love is a member of the USPGA Tour policy board and the President's Cup is a PGA Tour creation.
"It's a great event," Love said. "But it's not as exciting as the Ryder Cup. You can see that in the players, and you can see that in the fans."
Some might argue you can see it in the results, too. Just 10 months ago, an uninspired American team trudged down to Australia and got hammered as never before. - NZPA
