New Zealand golf No 1 Danny Lee walked off the Riviera Country Club in the dark today with his tournament chances looking just as gloomy.
The 21-year-old Korean-born Kiwi needs to birdie the final two holes of his second round to make the cut and play the weekend at the Northern Trust Open in California. Lee made an excellent birdie at the par 3 16th to get to five over par before trudging off the course because of darkness.
Eight players of the 144-strong field will have to return Saturday morning (local time) to finish, with the cut likely to be at a three-over par 145 total.
Lee, who struggled on day one with a four over par 75 to be in a share of 101st place, got off to a dream start with a birdie at the first but faltered on his front nine to put his tournament chances into jeopardy.
He made four bogeys on the last six holes of the front nine to drop back to three over for the day and seven over for the tournament but rallied on the way home to get back to one over for the day and within two shots of making the cut.
