KEY POINTS:
New Zealand's Simon Owen was two shots off the pace and Bob Charles a shot further back after the first round of the Senior British Open golf championship at Gullane, Scotland today.
Owen managed a one-under-par 70 in the 1.5 million euro ($2.67 million) event at the 6373-metre, par-71 Muirfield Golf Links course, lying 11th equal alongside such players as Ben Crenshaw, Tom Watson, Jay Haas and Tom Kite.
Charles, a former British Open champion, was on 71, lying 23rd equal.
Nick Faldo recaptured his famous competitive edge to shoot a three-under 68 for a share of the lead in his senior tour debut.
The six-time major champion made six birdies.
Joining him at three-under were Dave Stockton, Nick Job and Gordon J Brand.
